We’ll soon be into the Tuscan vacation booking season and many of you who are planning your next visit will be looking for family-friendly accommodations in Tuscany. The first thing to know is that Italians love children! Families always bring the kids when they eat out at a restaurant and most vacation accommodations welcome children. The second important point is that Tuscany offers a very wide choice of agriturismi (self-catering farmhouses and farm apartments) and self-catering village apartments that are ideal for family holidays, with plenty of child-friendly gardens, vineyards and olive groves where children can safely run free far away from motor cars. The activities of wineries and olive oil producers also fascinate almost all children.
Another attraction of the Tuscany countryside for children are the mediaeval villages, castles and tower houses to be seen everywhere. Running around a car-free hamlet such as Montefioralle is a totally new experience for most English-speaking children, many of whom are accustomed to modern suburbs more than anything else.
Most agriturismi have their own swimming pool (but note that these are rarely if ever enclosed by a safety fence) and public pools, although less common than in other countries, are to be found. There is an excellent public swimming pool complex in Greve in Chianti, for example.
