Greve in Chianti has an excellent public library that was inaugurated on May Day 2013. Unusually for contemporary architecture in this part of Tuscany, the design is both aesthetically and functionally extremely good. The terracotta upper part of the building rests on a travertine base and is beautifully balanced. The interior is spacious and light, and the potential problem of summer heat and exposure of books to sunlight has been effectively handled in an aesthetically pleasing manner. A large selection of books of local interest are on open shelves, easily accessible for consultation.
The archives of the area are also housed here, in two groups: - "pre-unification" administrative records from 1397 to 1878 - "post-unification" administrative records from 1879 to 1965 Permission to access the pre-unification records should be requested in the first instance from the Soprintendenza Archivistica di Firenze after which an appointment can be made with the library to view the material requested.
Registered library users have access to interlibrary loans via the library.
The library is named after Carlo and Massimo Baldini. Carlo Baldini was a local historian whose books are highly recommended on this website to anyone interested in the local history of Greve in Chianti.
