A note on terminology: the expression "Tuscan villa" originally and correctly refers to a large, architect-designed house that would have belonged to a large landowner in the past. A few of these are available as vacation rentals and they usually house between 10 and 30 people. Many villas have been converted into rural hotels. However, the word "villa" is now commonly used in the vacation accommodation sector to refer to any free-standing house. In fact, by far the majority of the "villas" offered for rent in Tuscany are former farmhouses (case coloniche) or converted farm buildings such as haysheds and oil presses. They usually accommodate between 2 and 8 people. An "agriturismo" is any kind of accommodation located on a working farm - villa, farmhouse, apartment in a farm house or B&B room in a farmhouse or a converted dependency. |
